Thing 21: Student 2.0 Tools
On the assignment calculator, I tried to set up a timeline for the separation of church and state. Since the establishment clause took effect in mid-December of 1791, along with the rest of the bill of rights, I decided I’d give the project a full year to be implemented. The calculator told me [...]

Thing 19: Other Social Networks
On Diane’s advice, I skipped Gather altogether, though I did read the article about it (”Can Gather.com Get Book Lovers Online?”).
The article set off my Spider-sense early on, and it continued to tingle throughout. I’m not sure why any industry needs to be “given a platform” by someone else; industries are quite capable of [...]

Youtube Strikes Back / Return of Thing 16
I uploaded a video. Unfortunately I failed to shrink the resolution so it took forever to upload, but that was something worth learning.
“The problem of the plastic ring,” a short film starring Slinky:

Thing 18: Facebook and SpamSpace
I signed up to Facebook in late 2007 and have used many of its features since then. Its “Notes” app is very basic, not nearly as useful as the blogging tools on Wordpress or Blogger, but that’s fine since I go there mostly to get a quick overview of what my friends are doing [...]

Thing 17: Podcasts
I have for been listening to the Metafilter podcasts for about nine months, though I don’t subscribe to them because I don’t like how the stack up and begin to seem like a chore instead of a pleasure. I know about RSS, including for podcasts, but still won’t be subscribing to them for the [...]

Thing 13: LibraryThing
I set up a new account at LibraryThing and added a dozen books. Two of them were incredibly popular (The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time and Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norell) but the rest weren’t nearly as popular (including The Complete Maus).
Some of the reviews on show were brilliant, very perceptive [...]

Thing 3: Blog Search Tools
I tried my first search on Technorati, Google Blog Search, BlogPulse, and Bloglines.
Unfortunately I was underwhelmed by all four, most likely because of the search terms (”inauguration booklist”).
Technorati returned three results, all of them irrelevant. Google Blog Search returned 3,737 results, and of the first 10 only one was relevant. BlogPulse returned 13 results, but [...]

Thing 2: What is Web 2.0?
I typically have some desk time where I’m not helping patrons; I can use that spare time to work on drafting 23 Things posts until they’re ready to publish.
I’m fond of Web 2.0 tools, esp. Flickr and Youtube but also blogs and wikis, so I wanted to familiarize myself with more of the tools available. [...]
